The Blade and Light Society organizes public service trips to locations abroad approximately once a year. Most recently, we have traveled to Santiago, Chile, and Bucharest, Romania. Trips are targeted at areas that have a high incidence of skin cancer and inadequate local medical resources for treatment. Usually, 8-10 Blade and Light physician members accompanied by several nurses and histotechnologists will spend a week at a volunteer site. Approximately half of the busy schedule is comprised of a comprehensive, intensive didactic training course in which Blade and Light members lecture assembled local physicians on topics relevant to skin cancer surgery. During the other half of the time, Blade and Light team members perform surgery on indigent patients with skin cancer as local physicians observe and learn.
